How you can contribute to making the world a cleaner place

Every one of us should strive to leave a positive impact on the world, one of the best ways to do exactly that is recycling. It is important to both the environment and us.

Every day, you should try to reduce the amount of wasted produced by you, this is one of the most effective ways to help the environment.

Next, reusing things instead of throwing them away is an excellent way to prevent wattage and polluting the environment.

However, if you cannot reuse, then consider recycling, the materials you throw away to be used again by making them into new products. (For example paper)

Here are a couple of things you can do at different places to help in stopping waste production:

  • At work
  • Packing your lunch in reusable boxes instead of using tin foil.
  • Try going paperless as much as possible, if you cannot, then use only what you need.
  • If an email, phone call or a personal visit gets the job done , then do not use paper
  • If you’re going to print something , choose the double-sided option
  • Choose refillable items such as printer cartridges, glue etc.
  • Reuse folders rather than order new ones
  • Recycle cans, plastic and glass bottles, paper, card, etc.

  • At Home
  • Avoid giving presents with excess packaging.
  • Have a go at making your own presents or cards
  • Buy solar-powered items such as pocket calculators and watches.
  • Choose products that can use mains power rather than batteries
  • Use rechargeable batteries when appropriate.
  • Consider growing your own vegetables – many varieties can be grown in small gardens.
  • Donate unwanted furniture and appliances to a furniture reuse scheme
  • Repair broken items rather than buy new ones
  • Take old carrier bags to the shop with you to use again or use them as bin liners
  • Scrap paper can be used both sides, for children’s drawings, shopping lists
  • Re-use containers like margarine tubs for storage of nails or coloring pencils
  • Donate unwanted clothing and small household items to charity shops and jumble sales.
  • Reuse items wherever possible. For example yoghurt pots are ideal for growing seedlings, swap magazines with friends, or give them to surgeries for waiting rooms.
  • Use local recycling facilities such as glass bottle banks, plastic bottle banks, can banks, shoe banks, textile banks etc.
  • Participate in any recycling service your district or borough council may offer from your home.

  • When Shopping
  • If you are buying a computer, enquire whether it can be upgraded easily without the need for a complete replacement. This means you will only need new components rather than a completely new computer.
  • Many products can be bought loose and in less packaging; DIY products (such as screws and paint brushes); fruit and vegetables; meats and cheese; stationery
  • Buy concentrated products or products sold in refill packs such as detergents, fabric conditioner, household cleaners and herbs and spices
  • Avoid buying lots of different cleaning products which are designed for different purposes, choose one multi-purpose cleaner instead
  • Avoid buying mini portions of food such as cereals, jam and coffee on a regular basis
  • Use crates to take home your shopping, or support ‘bag for life’ schemes
  • Buy re-useable products instead of disposable ones, like rechargeable batteries, plastic picnic tableware instead of paper ones.

Hopefully, you try to implement some of these (or all of them if you can) in your day to day life. The tips mentioned above are related to the concept of 3Rs, which stands for: reduce, reuse and recycle.

The point is to produce less trash, reuse things instead of throwing them away and finally recycling, so that we can remake new things from old stuff which reduces waste.

Most of what people across the world are doing is damaging and polluting the existing natural resources which are important for the survival of human life. So, what can you do to prevent this from happening? It doesn’t have to be a question for everyone out there. It can be that simple and personal. You have to make a choice and live a sustainable lifestyle.

What does sustainability mean? Well, it’s all about living a lifestyle that doesn’t negatively impact the environment or rather the needs of future generations. When meeting your current needs, you make sure you’re making environmental-conscious choices. What do you think about your home? Does it affect the environment around you in any way? If yes, what are the measures you think can help make your home more sustainable? Here’s what you can do.

Energy Efficient Light Bulbs

With the new lighting technology, the amount of energy used in homes for lighting purposes is dropping. People are moving away from incandescent bulbs which usually give off ninety percent of their energy as heat, thereby raising the energy bills. One way to have an energy efficient home is to install LED and compact fluorescent options which have both financial and long-term environmental benefits. They also last longer.

Create your Own Compost

It’s possible to make your yard more sustainable. How, you may ask? Well, simply create a compost pile using yard trimmings, dead leaves, vegetable craps, leftover food, egg shells, coffee grounds, kitchen scraps, and more. Over time, your composite pile will grow and, eventually, end up with a beautiful rich soil that will help create a more sustainable home. The compost will also provide rich soil for your vegetable and flower gardens.

Reuse and Recycle

What do you buy when you go shopping? Perhaps you just pick items randomly without checking any details on them. As long as it’s what you want, isn’t it? Why not pick recycled products whenever possible? If you come across a recycled option, it’s worth buying it. Other than just adding trash to a landfill every other month, consider reusing some of the things that seem to have some life. You can always reuse baggies, plastic bags, file folders, and other materials for something else. Don’t just toss them in the trash.

Investing in insulation will reduce the amount of energy used in your home thus making it sustainable and eco-friendly. With proper insulation, you won’t need to keep reheating your home, especially during the cold season. Start with your roof and walls. It’s also a good idea to double glaze your windows and cover any exposed hardwood floors in your home.

Embrace Natural Cleaning Products

With so many natural cleaning products in the market today, homeowners can avoid harmful cleaning chemicals which damage the environment. These chemicals often end up in the water supply and can be harmful to human life. Why do you have to use them?
